Portraits on Main Street – The Sydney Suite, by photo-based artist Hannah Minzloff, documents a neighbourhood in transition, celebrating the people and places along Charlotte Street in downtown Sydney.
This is the third in a series of five suites of community portraits in the province of Nova Scotia featuring Dartmouth, Yarmouth, Sydney, Annapolis Royal, and Antigonish. The completed suites of work are scheduled for exhibition at the Chase Exhibit Room, Nova Scotia Archives, Halifax in August 2015.
“The Centre is excited to see the completed exhibit after Hannah’s residency with us this past fall. It’s timely, contributing to the dialogue around the future of our downtown core,” says Lori Burke, Executive Director at Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design. “This project highlights the unique character of the downtown and how important its revitalization is to future community prosperity.”
Minzloff completed a three-week artist residency in Sydney last fall using the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design as her home base. Her portraits of Sydney’s downtown business owners, accompanied by a selection of archival photographs and a vision wall will bring a new perspective to our downtown. Minzloff has been working on this five-part project for the last three years and has already completed the Dartmouth and Yarmouth Suites.
“Portraits on Main Street – The Sydney Suite casts Charlotte Street in a meaningful way to residents, businesses and visitors alike,” says Minzloff. “Photographing people and businesses in Sydney was a great experience and I look forward to sharing the photos with the entire community.”
Portraits on Main Street – The Sydney Suite will be exhibited at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design from April 14th to May 30th, with the opening reception and artist talk on April 14th 5–8pm.
