Alistair MacLeod’s classic Cape Breton novel “No Great Mischief” is transformed in this stage adaptation by David S. Young. The production is directed by Todd Hiscock.
No Great Mischief is one of the most beloved Canadian novels of the past generation and has been staged to great acclaim in theatres across Canada. The production is heavily influenced by the music of Gaelic speaking Scottish descendants and features an eight person cast of actors/musicians, including Sam White, Tony Hajjar, Matt Earhart, Ken Chisholm, Josie Sobol, Bruce Cathcart, Cyrus Orkish, and Phonse Walsh.
The adaptation of this well-known and well-loved Canadian novel is superb. The staging is mesmerizing – simple, theatrical and imaginative. The use of storytelling and direct address to the audience is breathtaking. And the traditional Gaelic music – played live by the actors on stage – is entertaining and wholly transporting. Most importantly, the play tells the story of the need for family, for love and for connection.
