Celebrate the arrival of spring, enjoy an evening of entertainment and support the performing arts at Cape Breton University (CBU) when the Boardmore Playhouse presents The Active Voice, a spring concert that is sure to bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. All proceeds from the evening will go toward the Rita MacNeil Music Award and Liz and Harry Boardmore Award at CBU.
The Rita MacNeil Music Award was established after the untimely death of Rita MacNeil in 2013. Friends of Rita held a gala concert to celebrate her life shortly after her death and all proceeds went to the award. Rita’s legacy will forever live on in CBU students following their dreams of studying music.
The Liz and Harry Boardmore Award was established to honour the memory of Liz and Harry Boardmore, who gave their time and energy to theatre arts in the local area and in particular to Cape Breton University’s Boardmore Playhouse. The goal of the award is to help students who are pursuing an education in theatre arts.
The event will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at 8 pm at the CBU Boardmore Playhouse. It will be hosted by Ian Brodie and feature CBU’s a cappella ensemble, Endnotes, with special guests Janice Esther Tulk with Chris McDonald, Glace Bay Glee, Scott Sharplin and a few surprises!
Tickets are $10 each and available from Endnotes members, Caper Convenience and Doktor Luke’s Coffee House, 40 King’s Rd, Sydney (cash only at Doktor Luke’s).
“In a world where so much emphasis is put on training students for a predictable and safe career, it is easy to forget that some are destined to follow their dreams in the performing arts. The Active Voice is the first concert in support of scholarships specifically dedicated to music and drama at CBU. The creative arts are vital to any healthy community and to any serious university,” said English and drama professor Todd Pettigrew, who conceived and organized the show. “With attention and funding divided so many ways today, it’s not enough to just believe in the arts. We have to stand up for them. And that’s what this show is all about.”
