Fortress Louisbourg offers bike tours, garden seminars, and saintly celebrations

If anyone is looking for a summer activity beyond basking on the beach, the Fortress of Louisbourg offers programs with unique perspectives on the history of Cape Breton in the 1700s.

On Tuesday, July 26, The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and Velo Cape Breton invite interested bike riders to take part in an interpreted bike ride that will allow them to discover fascinating facts about the history and archaeology of this military complex whose possession deteremined the outcome in the Franco-British struggle for empire in North America.

The relaxed 6 km (one way) bike ride starts at the Royal Battery parking lot at 10am on July 26 and finishes at the King’s Garden on site with a delicious 18th century inspired picnic.

Also on the same day, the Fortress celebrates the Feast of Saint Anne with a special procession, hymns and artillery salute.

And the seminars conducted on the Fortress grounds continue into the months of August and September.

On Saturday, August 20, the topic of the third seminar in the series is “Drying herbs and herbal medicine”. Participants will learn about the many uses of herbs including how to cure a tooth ache and soothe skin irritations and will collect herbs to dry and make an herbal remedy.

“Harvesting”, the last of the four seminars on Saturday, September 10, focuses on harvesting the garden. Participants will learn tips on harvesting and how food was stored over the winter in the 18th century. Then they will help harvest the vegetables and cook a meal over an 18th century fireplace.

The time for both seminars is 10 am to 12 noon, rain or shine. There are a limited number of spaces so registration is required. To pre-register and to ask about registration fees, phone 902-733-3552.
