Auditions for CBU Drama Group’s 40th season September 18, 19

The CBU Drama Group is celebrating its 40th Season of Plays, promising a series of events that live up to its legacy of providing engaging theatre in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Auditions will be held September 18 and 19 for those who want to be involved, with CBU students and members of the community welcome to try out.

In the call-out for auditions, artistic director Todd Hiscock was enthusiastic about the upcoming season. “We’re inviting those who took part in the past to consider returning and we are always happy to introduce newcomers to the theatre,” says Hiscock. Actors over the age of 13, dancers, and singers will be needed to fill parts in the upcoming plays. Technicians, stage managers, and stage crew are also needed.

The season’s main offerings will include Vimy, a new play in Canadian Theatre, the classic musical Oklahoma, Aphra Behn’s The Rover, and the children’s play Robin Hood. One of the perennial highlights of the series is the One Act Play Festival, which takes place near the end of each season. The festival allows new and experienced playwrights to submit new or established works. Script submissions are due September 30.

There are plans under way for a special 40th anniversary event. Details are under wraps for now, but theatre-goers should pay attention for more details as the fall theatre season gets underway.

The CBU Drama Group’s activities date back to when Elizabeth and Harry Boardmore came to Cape Breton in 1966 and worked at establishing a lively theatre tradition in Sydney. In 1990, the theatre space at CBU was named after the Boardmores in honour of their hard work and dedication towards arts in the community.
