Port Hawkesbury’s Granville Green concert series kicks off August with Toronto based singer-songwriter Matthew Barber.
Barber, brother of once Halifax based singer songwriter Jill Barber, built his career both as a solo artist and as a member of the extensively-toured band The Union Dues. He has been going strong on the Canadian Music scene since the 2003 debut of his indie album Means and Ends, which attracted big label attention. He made his big-label debut with the 2005 recording Sweet Nothing, for which he enjoyed commercial success. After a courtship with the Warner label, Barber returned to his indie recording roots with the release of Ghost Notes in 2008.
Successes in his solo career haven’t prevented Barber from a growing resume of collaborative work, including a foray into theatre. He composed the score for the The Haunted Hillbilly, which ran at the Segal Centre for the Arts in Montreal in May 2008. For that effort, he earned the Montreal Theatre Critics’ award for Best Sound.
Barber will be joined by Nova Scotian up-and-comer Ryan MacGrath, who arrived on the East Coast music scene with his debut EP In My Own Company. The recording won the singer-songwriter two Music Nova Scotia awards and critical acclaim. His full length debut album Cooper Hatch Paris is set for release on July 31.
