Four Cape Breton artists won awards in nominated categories at the Bell Aliant 2010 East Coast Music Awards presented by RBC at Centre 200 in Sydney. Popular Mabou fiddler Andrea Beaton won Instrumental Recording of the Year for her fourth album Branches. Dawn and Margie Beaton, also from Mabou, won Roots / Traditional Group Recording of the Year for their first album Taste of Gaelic. Forever nabbed their third ECMA, winning this year’s MB2/Joint Venture Aboriginal Recording of the Year for Reborn while the Tom Fun Orchestra won their second ECMA for “Throw Me To The Rats” (Directed by: Alasdair Brotherston & Jock Mooney and co-produced by Shot on Site Media) in the Video of the Year category.
The Rankin Family and the late Scotty Turner were also recognized with awards Sunday night. Following a special performance by Jimmy, Raylene, Cookie, Heather and the late John Morris’ daughter Molly, The Rankin Family was honoured with the Director’s Special Achievement Award for their extraordinary contribution to East Coast music. And an all-star lineup–featuring Rose Cousins, Carmen Townsend, Dave Gunning and Lennie Gallant fronting a band led by Gordie Sampson and including Scotty Turner’s son Trevor Turnball–paid tribute to Turner with four of his songs as he was recognized with the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award.
Halifax “singing-songwriter” Joel Plaskett was the big winner of the night. Propelled by his album, Three, Plaskett took home six music awards Sunday night: Sennheiser Entertainer of the Year, Konica Minolta Male Solo Recording of the Year, FACTOR Recording of the Year, Vibe Creative Group Single of the Year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year, and MapleMusic Pop Recording of the Year. Plaskett actually ended ECMA weekend with seven awards, as he nabbed the Producer of the Year Award at Friday’s industry awards brunch.
Other multiple award winners included Prince Edward Island’s Catherine MacLellan, who took Female Solo Recording of the Year and Folk Recording of the Year. Halifax’s In-Flight Safety also won a pair of awards, taking home Group of the Year and Alternative Recording of the Year. New Brunswick’s The Motorleague added to their Capri Cabaret Loud Recording of the Year from Saturday night by adding the Bell Aliant Fan’s Choice Video of the Year Award.
